		<description>...It came up in conversation recently with fellow illustrators that my work is predominantly Black and white, so with this personal piece I thought I'd make a tentative step into the world of colour and push the creative boundaries of my body of work.

Credit where credit's due; The idea of a sweeping mass, as well as the colour scheme was loosely Inspired by my coveted and framed copy of Drew Millward's At The Drive In screen print.

Millward has been one of my favourite illustrators for a while now, and his wonderfully eccentric style, vivid colour palette and imagination is bewildering! I implore you all to check out his stuff. The man's truly an illustration wizard.

"Rose"

Mortality. One thing that every living thing in this world can be sure of. No matter how beautiful someone, something or some creature is, it's a fact that given long enough, everything suffers the ongoing onslaught and ravages of time.

Hand drawn with watercolour, pen and inks on fabriano paper. 32"x24"

		<description>Getting to Clarity
When things get too much, it's good to revert back to zero.

&#60;img src="http://payload8.cargocollective.com/1/0/14112/2460591/papercut4.jpg" width="475" height="714" width_o="475" height_o="714" src_o="http://payload8.cargocollective.com/1/0/14112/2460591/papercut4_o.jpg" data-mid="12402169"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Bombarded.
In today's post-modern society we're constantly bombarded. That is, we are constantly bombarded through our sensory systems and it affects the mental state. With advertising ever prevalent through all platforms and social networking becoming the forefront of everyone's priorities. It's as if people are turning into mindless moronic drones. It's nauseous.

I'm no angel myself, I embrace technology, I use the internet. It's brilliant and has it's uses, but everything in moderation right? It's when the masses become dependent to live their lives through technology that I feel it can errode humanity... "I just ate a bowl of porridge it was lush LOLZ", "I just woke up", "I just scratched my bum".

After all we're autonomous sentient beings capable of thought too... supposedly.

This piece is a little surreal, there's iconography in places but serve no specific meaning. The main point of the piece is to depict a person wading through a sea of intangible 'cyber' jargon to reach a state of peace and clarity within herself.

This piece was done 'oldschool' with just a scalpel and a piece of paper. No wet media involved here.

A revival of a piece I put up on my blog.

I've been a fan of Haruki Murakami for a while. Whilst his books aren't necessarily the most action packed, his smooth writing is full of angst, confusion and emotions (as it's usually through the perspective of a teenager). It's simply down right slick.

Norwegian Wood has been made into a motion picture now and as much as I liked it, I have to admit I still prefer the book. I implore you all to pick up any of his many books and give it a try.

This piece was created with inks and a fine pen on watercolour paper. It's a portrayal of Toru and his first love Naoko.</description>

Now I'm a big fan of seafood. In my lifetime I've probably eaten hundreds, maybe a thousand of these slippery water borne creatures. But I've been thinking recently what if the tables were turned? What would a gnarly looking fish look like if it were to eat me? Or how weird would a fish have to look for me to say 'no thanks' I'm not eating that? To be honest though, I'll still have a few of these guys on a plate given half a chance.

Enjoy.

		<description> Order in Chaos
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/14112/1791326/abstract1.jpg" width="670" height="1006" width_o="799" height_o="1200" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/14112/1791326/abstract1_o.jpg" data-mid="8829533"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

in short 30x22 mixed media abstract geometric piece on 300gsm bockingford paper.

info
Another personal exploration into different ways to illustrate a point.

Abstract and contemporary artwork may be criticized by the mainstream for being vague and pointless but in my view it's these very pieces that stand the test of time. They're timeless because they don't replicate a trend, a fad, an object or 'something' 'real'.

Having said that, these compositions might nudge a little something in your head that reminds you of something physical or an intangible idea.

For me abstract art serves the imagination of the viewer. If the viewer is willing to invest more time absorbing the work then the more they'll get out of it. If they dismiss it as garbage then they'll serve only as an eyesore. From Kandinsky to Mondrian, from this 'ism' to that 'ism' there's plenty of work out there from different times that people are baffled and confused by and I love it.

Here's my piece. Not inspired by any concept or any other artist as such but an experiment of colours, textures and media.

I wanted to play with the tactility of the heavyweight paper, the texture, the spontaneous nature of inks, the delicate pencil work and the precise personality of black ink pens.

I guess I'll call it Order in Chaos. Just to give it that cliché, pretentious, fine art edge of you must.

Really though, It's a bit chaotic in my head when you give me a box of mixed media and tell me to go nuts with no 'thing' to illustrate. But no matter how chaotic it can get, there's always an eventual form of order in the composition.

Hope you enjoy it

"A mail art project brought to you by Ruben and friends.

Ruben Cooke began cancer treatment for relapsed Hodgkins Lymphoma at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford in the month of January, 2010.

This project has been designed to provide some distraction from the reality of his situation. We plan to exhibit some or all of the work received, upon completion of Ruben’s treatment.

Our theme, “splice“ has multiple definitions but, crucially, contains the word ICE, which directly references the combination of chemotherapy Ruben will be receiving for the duration of his treatment."
_________________________________

A relative of mine was diagnosed with Lymphoma and like Ruben, also underwent treatment. It's a terrible condition and the treatment is unbearable. When I came across this brief, I felt obliged to participate.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/14112/431762/splice1.JPG" width="670" height="852" width_o="2048" height_o="2606" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/14112/431762/splice1_o.JPG" data-mid="1921041"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/14112/431762/splice2.JPG" width="670" height="934" width_o="2048" height_o="2856" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/14112/431762/splice2_o.JPG" data-mid="1921080"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The concept of the piece was to create a beautiful natural image from the use of very industrial materials. The message is that there's still hope for life even after a barrage of industrial processes.

A photograph of a flower was taken and then photocopied. Nail varnish remover (a toxic solvent) was applied to the photocopy and rolled through a rollerpress in order to transfer the image to a perspex sheet.

For 8 weeks leading up to the 28th November 2009, the art collective co4project formed, organised, hosted and created the collaborative exhibition entitled "polluted minds" held at tactileBOSCH galleries, Llandaff North, Cardiff.

The co4 project consists of myself, and :

Adam Travers
Bill Giles
Dave Hazelgrove

[filmed by excellent documentary film maker and friend Toby Cameron]

The concept, 'polluted minds' stemmed from the idea, 'what if 4 minds collide?' How our ideas polluted each other on paper, and also a loose theme surrounding 'pollution' entered the creative process. Not pollution in terms of environmental pollution but more unseen aspects of pollution such as over population, technological progression and the implications that entails such topics.

		<description>In April of 2010, Chapter Arts of Cardiff called out for artists to submit work for upcoming exhibition, 'Difficult' by Helen Frik. The brief was to create toys for one of her installation pieces. I attended a workshop they arranged and produced the plush toy below without prior experience to any sort of stitch craft.

The piece was featured in the exhbition in a dark room full of other custom toys. I wasn't able to record any pictures in situ due to lack of light in the environment.

Helen Frik Difficult exhibition

‘Difficult’ is universal and productive. If there were no difficulty in passing electricity through a copper wire, there would be no heat or light; without death, life would be invalid. Traces of difficulty are to be found in all histories and, consequently, we all have personal experience of it.

This paradox of essential but undesirable difficulty lies at the heart of Helen Frik’s exhibition and forms the basis of three new, large-scale commissions to be premiered in Wales: a stream of noise that occasionally crystallises into music; the unveiling of vitreous antagonisers in gaudy uniform, and a sea of homemade toys, contributed by the general public, that inhabit the realm where the trickiness of craft and the simple pleasures of dumb anthropomorphism meet.
